Liam holds a BA in Comparative Literature from Yale, a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California at Berkeley, and an MSW from the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work. He is a Licensed Masters Social Worker under the supervision of Kate MacShane, LCSW-C.

Liam is licensed in Maryland and Pennsylvania, and can provide telehealth sessions for client physically located in those states. He sees clients in person in our Ellicott City office.

Liam is a trans, nonbinary, queer, white therapist who believes the heart of psychotherapy is a trusting relationship in which clients feel safe enough to delve into their felt experiences and explore parts of themselves that feel painful or overwhelming. His approach is one of deep, empathic listening informed by mindfulness practice, liberation psychology, and psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, attachment-based, and relational modalities.

Liam’s work is trauma-informed and based on an awareness that systemic oppression as well as specific traumatic experiences may be contributing to clients’ struggles. Trauma can have many causes, such as childhood abuse or neglect, attachment wounds, sudden loss, injury or illness, exploitative work conditions, power imbalances in relationships, or domestic, community or institutionalized violence. Some of Liam’s clients want to process historical and intergenerational traumas. Others experience daily microaggressions. He invites clients to speak to these experiences and express what they may not be able to say elsewhere.

Liam works with adolescents, adults, elders, individuals, couples, and families. He specializes in the LGBTQIA2S+ community and welcomes clients in consensually nonmonogamous, polyamorous, and monogamous relationships. He is sex-positive and kink-knowledgeable and supports individuals and couples in having healthy and fulfilling sex lives.

Liam gained experience working with diverse clients at Whitman Walker Behavioral Health and the University of Maryland Law and Social Services Program. He also has extensive teaching experience in both community and academic settings. Before practicing psychotherapy, he taught in the English Department at Hunter CUNY and the Comparative Literature Department at UC Berkeley. He also taught English language in Ladakh, India and community sex education courses for San Francisco Sex Information. Liam currently serves on the board of the TransGender Education Association of Greater DC and offers trainings and professional education courses for mental health professionals, medical residents, and psychiatric hospital staff on best practices for working with transgender patients.
