Max Frankel, LMFT

Psychotherapist
pronouns: he/him

Max holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from San Diego State University and a Master of Science in Couples and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland.

Max will see clients in person in our Frederick office, and also via telehealth.

Max is a cisgender male, gay, white, Latino therapist who approaches therapy with the understanding that we are all storytellers, shaped by the narratives we inherit, the relationships we form, and the experiences that leave their mark on us. He strives to create a space that feels warm, collaborative, and grounding, where clients feel supported in exploring their inner worlds and relational patterns with curiosity and care.

He believes that clients are the experts on their own lives, and he works collaboratively to help people reconnect with their voices, explore meaning, and reshape patterns that no longer serve them. Max enjoys working with individuals and couples navigating identity formation, life transitions, relationship dynamics, themes surrounding sex and intimacy, and the ongoing process of becoming more fully themselves. He is especially drawn to supporting clients as they explore authenticity, untangling who they are from who they’ve been told to be, and learning to move through the world with greater self-trust and self-compassion.

Max is sex-positive and kink-affirming, and he welcomes conversations around intimacy, desire, and relationships in all their complexity. Max understands how stigmatized these topics can be, and he is committed to creating a nonjudgmental space where clients can talk honestly about what they want, what they fear, and how they hope to feel more connected, both to themselves and to others.

Max’s approach to therapy is rooted in Humanistic and Narrative therapies while informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and broader systemic frameworks. He is attentive to how culture, power, and identity shape personal stories, and he approaches these conversations with openness and respect. If you’re looking for a therapist who will meet you with compassion, invite reflection, and hold space as you explore your story, Max would be honored to work with you.
