Kalen Karpoff

Kalen holds a Bachelor of Science from Towson University and is an advanced-year student in the Clinical Social Work program at University of Maryland, Baltimore at the Shady Grove universities.
Kalen is supervised by Justine Kilian, LCSW-C. He provides sessions in person at the Frederick office, and via telehealth for clients physically located in the state of Maryland.
Kalen is a white, transgender, and neurodivergent clinical intern. He strives to provide a safe and inclusive environment for clients to deepen their self-understanding and live as their true selves. He values the importance of working collaboratively with the client as a team and viewing them within their unique context.
He is interested in working with the trans and gender non-confirming population, as well as those aiming to learn more about their overall identity. He also is interested in issues related to life transitions. He enjoys taking an integrative therapeutic approach, drawing from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and narrative therapy.
He applies minority stress theory and intersectionality when working to tailor treatment with the client, attending to the specific stressors the community is faced with while also highlighting client strengths.
Kalen has experience working with adolescents struggling with an array of mental health matters, supporting them within group settings as well as individual check ins. He also worked alongside clinicians in the health and human services department, helping to connect clients with unique needs to long-term care.
